3D Character Design Volume 1 - Proto-concepting for Film with Scott Patton

In this DVD, Scott Patton shows the processes he uses to create finished character designs for feature films. This DVD explores Patton's fast and efficient method for concept sculpting, skipping the 2D sketch phase all together and designing the character entirely within ZBrush. This method of design is more interactive and has allowed him to work with directors one-on-one directly in 3D. From basic form to final detail, Patton uses a combination of ZBrush’s tools and straight forward explanations to show how a character can be created without the usual time restrictions and hassle of most 3D packages. He covers everything from blocking out the forms and fleshing out the muscles, to adding props, detailing with alphas and posing the character.

This DVD explores Patton's fast and efficient methods for creating a final color rendering using ZBrush® and Photoshop®. Patton shows how he squeezes the most from ZBrush’s powerful renderer, side-stepping the often complex renderers of standard 3D packages. In creating both a wide and close-up shot of the character, he shares creative Photoshop tips and tricks to quickly get to a finished piece of concept art from the ZBrush renders, covering topics such as adding and refining skin texture, hair, eyes, shadows and scars. Patton also discusses how to quickly create backgrounds that enhance the character and overall composition.

Gnomon BTS Matte Painting for Production with Jared Simeth

BEHIND THE SCENES (BTS) is an exciting DVD series developed to showcase the creation of a game cinematic sequence. In this chapter of the series Jared Simeth demonstrates the creation of two matte paintings. Starting with concept paintings provided by BTS Art Director Mark Goerner, Jared goes through the process of creating simple 3D geometry and matching the camera in Maya. In Photoshop® he executes both a pan and tile style 2D matte painting, and one to be used with a 3D camera move. He covers techniques for keying, creating custom brushes and working with Photoshop’s perspective tools. In Maya, Jared shows how to project the painting onto the 3D geometry in preparation for the final camera move. The viewer will also see production meetings in which both the concept and execution are discussed and critiqued.

Eat3D ZBrush 3.5 Character Production

In this DVD Michael Pavlovich starts off by taking up where the first DVD left off and covers the new features in ZBrush 3.5 R3. After the new features are covered he takes everything that you have learned up to this point and puts it into practice by creating an entire highres character right inside Zbrush. Many techniques are used during this character creation process that would benefit almost anyone.

After the character is made he goes through many of the useful ZPlugins like Zapplink, Subtool Master and even goes through creating a turntable video of your character. At the very end there is a bonus video that takes you through rendering out passes from ZBrush and compositing them inside Photoshop.

Gnomon The Making of White Swan - Music Video Shot Breakdown
with Sil Van Der Woerd

In this three disc set, the entire production process of making the music video White Swan is revealed. Winner of “Best Music Video” at hdfest, White Swan is a unique collaboration between students from the Gnomon School of Visual Effects and director Sil van der Woerd. This set breaks down step-by-step the process for integrating live action footage with complex digital sets to create an imaginative world inspired by the music of singer Lolly Jane Blue.

Each disc explores a particular phase in the production's pipeline from concept to final compositing. Sil begins with a discussion of early explorations and the pre-production process, and he's followed by the students as they cover their particular responsibilities for the production. Sil and the students cover many technical subjects including motion tracking in Boujou, compositing, rotoscoping and keying in After Effects, previsualization, modeling in ZBrush, texturing in BodyPaint, digital sets, animation and effects in Maya.

This set hopes to inspire and educate anyone who dreams of creating their own live-action production that incorporates dynamic visual effects.

Eat3D The Fountain Low Res, UVing and Baking

Learn how to create professional low res meshes for next-gen games. The bulk of this demonstration is in 3ds Max 2010 where the instructor uses the new graphite modeling tools to optimize and create meshes to be used to capture the details from the fountain high res mesh. After the low res mesh is created the instructor creates the UVs for all the modular pieces of the fountain and then goes into great detail about the baking options to create your normal and ao maps.

The techniques used in this video have been proven effective in production to quickly create professional next-gen game meshes.

Digital Tutors - Sculpting Hard Surdaces in Zbrush 3.5 R3

Zbrush has always been a great application for sculpting incredibly detailed organic shapes. But did you know that Zbrush has a number of useful tools that will help you to sculpt more hard surface shapes as well? In this course, we'll talk about the Polish brushes, which will allow us to combine smooth curves and sharp edges in a single stroke. The strokes themselves have been enhanced with Backtrack, allowing us to get smoother, straighter lines when sculpting. We'll also cover the Re-mesh functionality which will allow us to combine multiple shapes in Boolean-type operations. We can also take advantage of the Zbrush primitives to give us a great starting point for some of our hard surface shapes.

Digital Tutors - Architectural Previsualization in Maya|1.3 GB|

In this series of lessons, we will model and texture a 3d building and integrate it into a photographic plate.

Architectural visualization is an invaluable tool for being able to see a building, often inside and out, before constructing it in real life. Seeing structures in 3d will often highlight issues that may not be apparent when looking at drawings and plans. We'll start by building up the geometry of the two buildings from scratch, using many of Maya's modeling tools. We'll use deformers to create sweeping curves and we'll use existing geometry to add detail like balconies and rails. With the modeling complete, Kyle will take you through the process of adding materials and textures to the geometry. You'll also go through the necessary steps for adding appropriate lighting and setting up your renders. In the end, you'll have a nice final render with your custom built 3d building sitting in a real location.
